Description

Mount Elbert (4,399 m) is the highest summit of the Rocky Mountains and the easiest to climb of all US peaks above 4,200 m. Its Northeast Ridge trail is a straightforward non-technical hike — no ropes or special gear needed. This makes it the most popular "fourteener" (peak above 14,000 ft) in Colorado. Over 20,000 hikers reach the summit every year via well-maintained trails.

Important Information

No permit required. Trailhead at North Elbert Trailhead (3,048 m) — well-signed. Start before 6 AM to avoid afternoon thunderstorms (descent by noon). Good hiking boots and trekking poles recommended. Acclimatize at least one night at altitude before attempting. No technical skills required.
